David, 13.

David

I am 13 years old and I live in a small country town called Mirboo North in Gippsland. I enjoy drawing and writing.

I can’t remember a time that anyone has told me I can’t do something. My brothers and I all have similar interests and my mum lets us do what we are interested in. I guess I’m lucky but actually I don’t know any different really.

I sometimes worry I can’t handle school but when I go anyway and I try, I’m proud of myself for doing it. This year starting high school, I worried that the work might be hard and I might not be able to make friends. I kept going because I need to learn new things in life. The staff at the school were really friendly and when I get worried they help by giving me less classes to attend. They give me time to complete my homework during the day so I can relax after school. I also went on a school camp and made some friends there.

When I grow up I want to be an artist and a writer. I love to write chapter books. I won an award at school for my writing once. I like to draw anime and cartoon figures. I’m going to make sure I do these things because I love doing these things, and I look forward to doing them every day of my life.

The I CAN Network is important because it gets the word out there about how cool Autism is. I’m not sure how to describe what Autism means to me because I don’t know any other way to be, and I’m glad. My Autistic brain thinks in pictures and is very quick, which makes me do well in school. I’m proud of that.

The I CAN Network is creating the inclusive society that young people like David deserve. Join us by donating or giving monthly to create employment opportunities for people on the Autism Spectrum, and to support schools and workplaces to celebrate their individual strengths.
